Preventive Dental Services

Hygiene & Cleanings

Routine checkups and cleanings are essential to good oral health. Even patients with an excellent brushing and flossing routine should see a dentist for regular visits.

During your cleaning, your hygienist will use advanced instruments to clean areas that are hard to reach with just a toothbrush or floss. But even areas that are easy to clean will benefit from treatment with our advanced tools.

Then, after your cleaning, Dr. Mackie will stop by to complete a full oral exam. With a tooth-by-tooth inspection, we can catch decay and cavities before they have a chance to develop into a serious problem.

If we find anything during your exam, we can talk to you about your treatment options and answer any questions you might have about treatment.

Bruxism/Night guards

While bruxism (tooth grinding and clenching) is a common occurrence, it can be destructive to your oral health. Bruxism can be a side effect of numerous sleep disorders, stress, anxiety, or just an unconscious habit.

Our goal is always to protect and preserve your teeth, but treating bruxism can have a positive effect on your whole life. Stopping your teeth grinding and clenching can lead to a better night’s sleep and relief of painful headaches and sore jaw muscles.

Your custom-made night guard will help you manage your condition by providing a barrier between the chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Mouth guards/Sports guards

If you or someone else in your family is an athlete, our Boerne dental practice has a special appliance that will help you protect your smile, no matter what your activity.

Sealants

Dental sealants provide patients with an easy, convenient way to prevent decay. Sealants are placed when a tooth has deep grooves on chewing surfaces. Bacteria can hide in these grooves and cause tooth decay.

No anesthetic is needed to paint sealant on the tooth, and while the process can be completed in a minimal amount of time during your hygiene appointment, sealants provide added protection for years.

Oral Cancer Screening

While most cases of oral cancer are caused by specific behaviors, such as tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption, another quarter occur in patients who don’t engage in any of these risky behaviors.

That’s why we strongly recommend that each one of our patients undergo an oral cancer screening during routine checkups. In too many cases, oral cancer isn’t diagnosed until it’s already reached a well-developed stage. We want to reverse that trend with regular preventive screenings.

“I dealt with dental problems most of my life. As a child, my parents and I visited the dentist office for regular check-ups, and 9 times out of 10, I would have to return because of some dental problem. As I grew older, it was even more important for me to continue my cleaning and regular check-ups, but I began to realize that my dental issues never went away because I only got “patch-up” work done from the many dentists I encountered.

Even if I didn’t have numerous dental health concerns, I hated to smile because of the way my teeth looked!!

On a visit to my regular dentist, I was referred to an orthodontist because he thought I needed braces!!!!
